Psyllium Husk

Psyllium Seed Husk is obtained from the seeds of the plant Plantago Ovata. The common
name in India, Isabgol, is derived from Persian words “isap” and “gol” meaning horse
ears as it describes the shape of the seed. It is an annual plant and flowers 60
days after planting. The seeds are exposed as capsules open during maturity.
Psyllium grows well under cool, dry weather and is cultivated post monsoon season.
Manufacturing Process
The Psyllium seed is first removed of impurities through sieves, magnets, destoners
and aspirators. These are dehusked through grinders, winnowers and aspirators. If
needed, the refined husk is pulverized into powder.
Properties
Psyllium Seed Husk mainly consists of mucilage. It is white-cream coloured and has
a slight acid taste.
Being hydrophilic, Psyllium Seed Husk swells after it absorbs water and forms a
mucilage.
Grades
Psyllium is offered in 85%, 95% and 98% purities in both husk and powder form.
